The Melchor Hall and Engineering Complex Conceptual Landscape Design Competition has successfully concluded with a short awarding ceremony last May 18, 2022 at the Cristy Hernandez Activity Center.
L. Arch Justin Z. Dimaculangan received the prize on behalf of First Prize winner, Team DNA, also consisting of Arch. Dexter Nuval and L. Arch. John Jay Amar. L. Arch Brian Alan L. Sabido, meanwhile, received Second Prize on behalf of his team with L. Designer Danrish V. Castillo and L. Designer John Emmanuel A. Dayag. Third Prize was awarded to L. Arch Vera M. Buenaventura and lan Carlo D. Del Rosario, REE.
Launched in January 2022, the competitors created designs capturing creativity and innovation. The landscape competition came from the perspective of University of the Philippines (UP) President Prof. Danilo L. Concepcion and the initiative of UP Diliman Chancellor Prof. Fidel R.
Nemenzo to make the campus more welcoming for students and the public. In addition, appreciation of outdoor spaces would encourage students to study, socialize, and relax. This could also be beneficial to their mental health and in preserving academic vigor. The objective of innovating the Melchor Hall site and Engineering Complex is also to encourage Eng’g alumni on visiting the campus more frequently and supporting College endeavors.
Judges comprised of Dr. Grace C. Ramos, Prof. Mitzi Marie Reyes, Prof. Marc J. San Valentin, L. Arch James, Christopher P. Buño, and Dr. Nappy L. Navarra who were also part of the technical working group along with Dr. Carl Michael F. Odulio, Dr. Eric Augustus J. Tingatinga, Dr. Fernando J. Germar, resource persons from UPAE Maj. Gen. Elmir S. Dela Cruz, AFP, (Ret.) and UPAE, Pres. Engr. Patrick Anthony P. Pascual, and the secretariat Dr. Eden May B. Dela Pena and Michelle Santos. Designs underwent blind judging on the basis of quality of analysis and planning, conceptual clarity, and likelihood of successful implementation.
The short awarding ceremony celebrated the win of competitors whose submissions also fully complied with the requirements and the deadlines. UP Diliman College of Engineering Dean Prof. Ferdinand G. Manegdeg gave the Welcoming Remarks for the event, summarizing the results of the competition. He also thanked UPAE for pooling donations for the prize. UPAE President Pascual also provided a brief message for the winners before the ceremony ended.
