The UP Diliman College of Engineering is proud to announce that Engineer Mamerto E. Tangonan, Deputy Governor of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), will be the esteemed guest speaker at the upcoming College of Engineering Recognition Rites. The event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at the University Amphitheater.

Engineer Mamerto E. Tangonan is currently the head of the Payments and Currency Management Sector (PCMS) of the BSP, where he plays a crucial role in addressing the dynamic interplay between digital money and physical currency. His expertise in the field of digital and traditional financial services, telecommunications, technology, and financial inclusion has made him a respected figure in the industry.

With over 28 years of experience, DG Tangonan has been at the forefront of numerous groundbreaking initiatives to advance financial services and digital transformation in the Philippines. One of his most notable accomplishments was his leadership of the six-year United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded E-PESO project, which aimed to accelerate the nation’s shift from cash to digital payments. Under his guidance, the project successfully provided technical assistance to the BSP in the implementation of the National Retail Payments System (NRPS).

DG Tangonan’s impressive portfolio includes the facilitation of financial inclusion by promoting the adoption of mobile money through the USAID-funded “Scaling Innovations in Mobile Money” initiative. He also played a pivotal role in establishing a Digital Financial Services-enabled agriculture value chain information system in Tanzania and collaborating with the Bank of Indonesia to secure an e-money license for Indonesian-based PT Smart Telecom.

Throughout his career, DG Tangonan has been committed to fostering economic growth and ensuring the safety and integrity of the Philippine currency. His expertise and dedication have made significant contributions to the financial landscape of the country.

Engineer Tangonan earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the prestigious University of the Philippines. He further honed his skills and knowledge by obtaining an Executive Master in Business Administration degree from the Asian Institute of Management. Additionally, he participated in an executive education program on financial inclusion policy design at the Harvard Kennedy School.

The College of Engineering Recognition Rites is an eagerly awaited event that celebrates the achievements and hard work of the graduates of Undergraduate Programs as of the end of MYT 2022, First Sem AY 2022-2023, and Second Sem AY 2022-2023. The ceremony will commence with an assembly time of 6:00 AM and the program will begin at 7:00 AM at the University Amphitheater.
